Accepting digital payments with FonePay

How the FonePay gateway fits into online orders, and the manual payment-proof route that most shops use today.

FonePay is the Nepali payment gateway PasaPOS integrates with for payments made by customers themselves, usually on an online order.

The manual route, used today

Most shops run this flow, and it needs no gateway account:

  1. The customer pays you directly, by wallet or bank QR.
  2. They upload a screenshot of the payment as proof with their order.
  3. You open the order, look at the proof, and either verify or reject it.

Until you verify, the order is clearly marked as unproven, so nothing leaves the kitchen on the strength of a screenshot nobody has read.

The gateway route

When a payment goes through the FonePay gateway itself, the customer is sent to FonePay, pays there, and FonePay reports the result back to PasaPOS twice: once when the customer returns to your site, and once server to server.

Those callbacks are checked rather than trusted. The signature is compared safely, the merchant code must be yours, the signed amount must match the amount of the transaction we created, and a transaction can only move from initiated to success once, so a replayed return or a duplicated webhook changes nothing. Settlement then runs through the same path as a payment taken at the counter, so it releases the table and deducts stock exactly like a cash sale.

If the merchant code or secret key is not configured, PasaPOS refuses callbacks rather than verifying them against an empty key.

Getting set up

Gateway payments need your FonePay merchant credentials added to your install. Talk to us before you switch it on, and keep using payment proof in the meantime.
